NZAE Education Trust Prizes
The New Zealand Association of Economists Education Trust was established by a trust deed dated 5 September 1990 to create a charitable trust for the furtherance of education for the economics profession and the advancement of the members the New Zealand Association of Economists (Inc) and to encourage overseas speakers to come and lecture in New Zealand and for other related and associated purposes”.
The trustees at the time of establishment were Robert Allan Buckle, Julia Mary Crouch, Jan Louise Whitwell and Lewis Tudor Evans.
The specific objects of the Trust today are:
- the furtherance of education for the economics profession
- to encourage overseas speakers to come and lecture in New Zealand
- to assist the New Zealand Association of Economists Incorporated to further the charitable purposes set out in (1) and (2)
- for any other purposes within New Zealand relating to the advancement of education beneficial to the community which are charitable according to the laws of New Zealand
The following Prizes are administered by the Education Trust and presented at the annual conference
Seamus Hogan Research Prize
The Seamus Hogan Research Prize is for the best paper on a public policy topic written by a student.
Jan Whitwell Prize
The Jan Whitwell prize is awarded for the best presentation by a student. Jan Whitwell Prize
Stata Prize for Excellence in Graphics Communications
The Stata Prize for Excellence in Graphics Communications will be awarded to the written paper that is deemed to make the best use of graphs for data visualization or communication of research findings using graphics.
Statistics New Zealand Prize
The Statistics New Zealand Prize is awarded for the paper that makes the best use of official statistics.
New Zealand Economic Policy Prize
The New Zealand Economic Policy Prize is being offered for the first time in 2011. It will be awarded to the paper that makes the best contribution to economic policy in New Zealand.
NZIER Poster Competition
This prize is given for the best poster displayed at the annual NZAE conference.
People’s Choice Poster Prize
Delegates at the conference will have the opportunity to vote for this award.
NZAE Education Trust Graduate Study Awards
Applications are invited from students currently attending New Zealand Universities to attend the annual NZAE conference.

Other Prizes
A R Berstrom Prize in Econometrics
The objective of the Prize is to reward the achievement of excellence in econometrics, as evidenced by a research paper in any area of econometrics. The Prize is open to New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of New Zealand who, on the closing date of applications, have current or recent (i.e. within two years) student status for a higher degree.
Honours Dissertation Prize
The Prize is awarded to the honours dissertation that is considered best amongst those from the Economics departments of New Zealand universities. Submissions are sought from each department before 30 November each year.
Distinguished Fellow Award
This award recognises New Zealand economists who have made a significant contribution to the development of economics. The Distinguished Fellow Award is one of the highest honors bestowed by the NZAE.
Distinguished Fellows
These began in 2004, and following a selection process by the NZAE Council, the President of the Association awarded the title “Distinguished Fellow of the NZAE” to four people who have made a significant contribution to the development of economics. A brief article will be commissioned, covering the life, work and contribution of each awardee, for publication in the December issue of the New Zealand Economic Papers in the year in which the award is made.

Requirements
- The Association will maintain a roll of Distinguished Fellows reserved for distinguished New Zealand economists to recognise their contribution to the development of economics (and its application).
- For this purpose, a New Zealander is defined as a person normally resident in New Zealand, or a New Zealand citizen living and working abroad, at the time he or she is awarded the title of Distinguished Fellow.
- The Council will publish criteria for the award of the title Distinguished Fellow, and will use those criteria to select one New Zealand economist for this award each year, or up to four New Zealand economists annually for the first three years that awards are made.The Council may choose to make no award in any year.
- The President of the Association will announce its award of the title at a suitable occasion and will ensure that the achievements of the recipient are appropriately publicised.
Criteria and Policies
Life Members
Any member or retired member who has made a significant contribution toward the development of the Association and the economics profession in New Zealand may be nominated for life membership of the Association in the following manner:
[a] Nominations are to be forwarded to the Council. Such nominations are to be signed by two financial members of the Association with a brief profile of the nominee’s achievements/service/career, as appropriate, for consideration by the Council.
[b] All such nominations will be considered by the Council which, at its sole discretion, may place suitable nominations before those attending the Annual General Meeting for confirmation by that meeting. If present at the Annual General Meeting, the proposer(s) and/or seconder(s) of the original nomination(s) shall be given the opportunity to speak on behalf of their nominee(s).
[c] All Life Members must be elected at a general meeting of the Association.
[d] Life Members shall be provided with an appropriate certificate signifying their Life membership status and shall be entitled to attend the Association’s Annual Conference free of charge. A citation shall be published in the New Zealand Economic Papers.
